Antique 18th Century Tibetan Polychromatic Cupboard Cabinet

  • £1,800.00

This brightly coloured polychrome painted cabinet is from Tibet, circa 18th century. The door works properly and stays closed with no stick. Tibetan cabinets such as these are 100-200 years old and come from monasteries and homes throughout Tibet, Gansu and Mongolia.

Historically, Tibet has been a thinly populated country of few resources. As such, genuine furniture items are rare and in high demand. The majority of pieces were made as articles of patronage for the local monasteries. This piece is in its original condition, in order to preserve its historic and investment qualities. There may be some traces of Ghee present (a clarified yak-butter mixture), which was used to ‘clean’ the cabinets on Buddhist holidays and other special occasions.
